![]() In creating the “Technician,” the Army was really just catching up with the Navy, which had long designated sailors according to the skill or, as the Navy calls it, their “rate,” which can be more important than rank. The stripes and the “T” just indicated pay grade. In fact, for most of the war, all Technicians, no matter the stripes, had all the authority of privates. They did specialized jobs, like drafting or crystal grinding. The “T” stood for “Technician” and indicated some special trade. The Army still used chevrons on top and rockers beneath, but now added a conspicuous capital “T” in the field underneath the chevrons. ![]() The Army also created some new enlisted ranks that complicated the simple Private-Corporal-Sergeant stripe system that had prevailed before the war. There were thousands of codes, and the system was confusing, but the basic structure is still with us today. All Jewish children, including Anne, had to go to separate Jewish schools.To keep track of these jobs, the Army created the MOS–Military Occupation Specialty Codes. Her father lost his company, since Jews were no longer allowed to run their own businesses. The rules meant that more and more places became off-limits to Anne. For instance, Jews could no longer visit parks, cinemas, or non-Jewish shops. ![]() Slowly but surely, the Nazis introduced more and more laws and regulations that made the lives of Jews more difficult. Five days later, the Dutch army surrendered. ![]() Not long after, on, the Nazis also invaded the Netherlands. On 1 September 1939, when Anne was 10 years old, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, and so the Second World War began. Things looked up when he started selling herbs and spices in addition to the pectin. Otto also tried to set up a company in England, but the plan fell through. ![]() Her father worked hard to get his business off the ground, but it was not easy. She learned the language, made new friends and went to a Dutch school near her home. Before long, Anne felt right at home in the Netherlands. ![]()
